The journal / CHAIN NOTES

The token, the picture and the permission are different records

An NFT listing often places a picture, a token identifier, a collection name and a purchase button in one card. That layout can make separate records feel like a single object. For research, pull them apart. The token record, its metadata, the displayed media and any permission to use the underlying work can require different sources and different questions.

Identify the token record

Start with the network, contract or collection reference, and token identifier appropriate to the example. A title or thumbnail is not enough to distinguish a token from another listing using similar artwork. Record the original source of the identifiers and the date checked. If you are practising, use a documented public example rather than connecting an account.

Keep the marketplace’s display labels separate from your identity fields. A marketplace may add categories, badges or descriptions of its own. Those labels can be useful context, but they should not silently replace the underlying reference. Your note should show which information came from the token-related source and which came from the interface presenting it.

Follow metadata to the media reference

Metadata can describe a token and point to associated media. Record what the source actually shows: a reference, a URL, an identifier or other documented structure. An image appearing in a browser does not by itself establish how it is stored, whether the reference can change, or how long the underlying content will remain available.

For a fictional example, token 42 points to a metadata file that references a drawing. Make three boxes for token, metadata and drawing. Ask which source identifies each box and how the references connect. This simple diagram prevents “I can see the picture” from becoming a claim about permanence or control of every related component.

Give permissions a separate record

Do not infer permission to reuse a drawing commercially from possession of a token or access to a download button. Record any stated licence or terms, where they were published and which work or token they purport to cover. Keep the actual wording available for the appropriate review rather than replacing it with your own broad label such as full ownership.

This is a document-gathering step, not a legal interpretation. If a project depends on publishing, adapting or selling the underlying work, obtain suitable advice about the applicable rights and terms. A token explorer or browser worksheet cannot establish that those permissions exist or resolve a conflict between different statements.

Preserve the date and the uncertainty

Add an observation date for metadata, media availability and marketplace statements. If a later visit differs, record the change without overwriting the earlier observation. Keep screenshots in context with source URLs and avoid treating a screenshot as proof that the linked work is authentic or authorised.

Finish with four short answers: which token you identified, what metadata you observed, where the media reference led and what permission information remains unresolved. Ethereum’s NFT overview offers introductory context, while specific collections require their own evidence. A useful reading note does not need a price forecast or a judgement about collectability. It needs enough separation between records that an attractive image does not answer questions about identity, persistence or rights that the image itself cannot answer.
